Transitioning to the Rutgers R

Check back often, as the page will be updated with new information and resources as they become available.

New Visual Identity

Rutgers is streamlining its brand with the Rutgers R to represent all units. Download the graphic files for the main marks and request a new signature by logging in to the signature generator.

The main marks have been added to the logo library on swag.rutgers.edu and can be applied to your orders for giveaways and promotional items.

Guidelines for aligning school, department, and unit names with the Rutgers R can be found in the Rutgers Visual Identity System User Guide and Quick Guide, which are both available for download.

You can also download new electronic business collateral, including PowerPoint templates, email signatures, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The primary R marks—Rutgers, New Brunswick, Newark, Camden, Foundation, The State University of New Jersey, and Rutgers Health—are available to download from the signature generator. You can also log into the signature generator to request a new signature.

Guidelines for aligning school, department, and unit names with the Rutgers R can be found in the Rutgers Visual Identity User Guide and Quick Guide, which are both available for download.

  • There will be a phased approach to using the Rutgers R. The current logotype will be phased out, and the shield retired. Starting in January 2024, graphic files will be available to allow all units and departments to begin using the Rutgers R on any new materials, templates, promotional items, and communications applications.

Resources are ready to support the transition of digital communications branding, starting now with the goal to complete this change by the beginning of the Fall 2024 semester. Non-digital branded items (signs, print material, promotional items) should be transitioned upon reorder and as budgets allow.

We are NOT asking any department to discard materials they have already printed or purchased. This transition should happen as part of your regular replacement and material update cycle as resources permit.

  • Rutgers is streamlining our visual identity under one logo to make it easier to recognize marketing and communications from the university and to improve institutional clarity. In 2006, applications of the Rutgers R expanded from an athletics to a universitywide spirit mark that has gained widespread recognition and affinity with many audiences and stakeholders.

  • We are asking every school and unit to phase in the Rutgers R during a reasonable update cycle that aligns with each area’s programmatic goals and resources. Resources are ready to support the transition of digital communications branding, starting now with the goal to complete this change by the beginning of the Fall 2024 semester. Non-digital branded items (signs, print material, promotional items) should be transitioned upon reorder and as budgets allow.

  • Only discard existing materials if you are planning to replace them. Consider ordering limited quantities of printed materials and giveaways during the fall semester. Consider delaying the installation of permanent signage. The Rutgers R will be available in January 2024 for these applications.

  • Institutional Planning and Operations is revising the universitywide sign guidelines to align with the Rutgers R Visual Identity System. Please work with facilities to determine if and when your building signage should change.

  • This page will be updated with new resources and information to help with the transition, so check back often. You may also email contactus@ucm.rutgers.edu with any questions about the transition to the Rutgers R.

  • No. The Rutgers Visual Identity System includes specifications to ensure a consistent and professional representation of Rutgers as a leading national public research university. Do not make your own marks. Please download the new Rutgers R files for primary marks (universitywide, chancellor-led units, etc.), school/unit signatures, and guidelines using the signature generator website.

  • When the unit marks are made available in January, you may use them immediately. Until we make the switch, you can continue to use the marks that you have.

  • Yes! There will be red with a black outline, a single color red, and a single color white.

  • Email the details to contactus@ucm.rutgers.edu, and we will do our best to accommodate your request. However, our priority is to complete the system so it can become available for use by everyone in January.

  • The only design element to be used is the Rutgers R.

  • The registered trademark will only be used with the Rutgers R on branded merchandise such as T-shirts and mugs. All other materials will not include the trademark registration symbol; however, all materials that use the Rutgers R are federally registered and protected Rutgers University marks.
