Words on Websites #3

This issue of Words on Websites was originally sent to the Rutgers Communicators Network on May 9, 2025

Greetings, Rutgers Communicators This is your next installment of Words on Websites.

These occasional emails offer information on best practices for website content management and production, tips for getting the most out of the Rutgers Core Component Library (RCCL) website building tool, and helpful resources from University Communications and Marketing, the Rutgers community, and elsewhere online.

🔧Building Accessible Web Pages
Web accessibility is essential for ensuring that all users can access university resources. Accessibility best practices also improve overall website usability. All content editors, website owners, and developers are responsible for creating and maintaining accessible digital content, in compliance with university policy. Accessible design includes clear navigation, logical structure, sufficient color contrast, ARIA labels for interactive elements, and descriptive alternative text for images.

The RCCL includes built-in accessibility features, such as the Editoria11y Drupal module, which site administrators can enable for ongoing content quality assurance. Editoria11y is a fast way to identify potential content accessibility issues on your web pages. Use it to supplement comprehensive testing with assistive technologies and manual review.

The Rutgers Office of IT Accessibility provides the university with comprehensive accessibility resources, including documentation, training, tools, and other services.

🌐RCCL Update
The RCCL user base continues to grow. Currently, 69 live websites are built with RCCL, with another 29 currently in development. The WordPress version of RCCL was released in early 2024 and now we are starting to see WordPress RCCL sites go live, with Pharmacy School website and the Brain Health Institute being two examples. WordPress RCCL offers the same style and designs offered in the Drupal version, but with features that long-time WordPress editors will find familiar and comfortable.

Schedule a demo of Drupal or WordPress RCCL at any time by completing this interest form.

Office Hours Poll Results
The poll gauging interest in an online “office hours” session with the UCM web team received few responses, so nothing formal will be scheduled. If you would like to schedule a 1:1 meeting with UCM to discuss SEO, analytics, content strategy, RCCL, or website accessibility, please email me directly.
